Arthritis is a common condition that affects the joints, causing chronic pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. Under the expert care of Dr. Saif Nabi Shah, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, patients receive comprehensive treatment tailored to their individual needs. Whether managing osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Shah is dedicated to improving your quality of life through effective, personalized care.

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is not a single disease, but a group of over 100 different joint conditions. The two most common forms are:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): A degenerative condition where the cartilage between joints wears down over time, leading to pain and stiffness. OA commonly affects the knees, hips, and hands, especially as people age or after an injury.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joints, causing inflammation, pain, and joint damage. RA can affect multiple joints at once, including smaller joints like those in the hands and feet.

Both forms can significantly impact daily life, causing discomfort and limiting mobility, especially if left untreated.

Symptoms of Arthritis

Arthritis symptoms can vary, but common signs to watch for include:

  • Persistent joint pain that worsens with activity or after periods of rest.
  • Swelling, stiffness, or warmth around the affected joints.
  • Reduced range of motion or flexibility in the joint area.
  • Fatigue or a general feeling of discomfort, especially with rheumatoid arthritis.

Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to managing the progression of arthritis and preventing further joint damage.

Arthritis Care and Treatment

Dr. Saif Nabi Shah offers a wide range of arthritis treatments, focusing on both non-surgical and surgical options. His goal is to alleviate pain, preserve joint function, and restore mobility through a personalized treatment plan.

  • Medication: Anti-inflammatory medications, disease-modifying drugs (DMARDs), and biologics are used to control inflammation, reduce pain, and slow arthritis progression.

  • Physical Therapy: Dr. Shah emphasizes physical therapy to strengthen the muscles surrounding your joints, improve flexibility, and enhance mobility, helping patients manage symptoms effectively without surgery.

  • Joint Injections: Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections can offer targeted relief, reducing inflammation and pain, and are ideal for patients with mild to moderate arthritis who are not yet candidates for surgery.

  • Surgical Treatment: In advanced cases where non-surgical interventions are insufficient, joint replacement surgery or arthroscopic procedures may be necessary. Dr. Saif Nabi Shah is highly experienced in performing these surgeries, offering cutting-edge solutions to restore joint function and reduce pain.

FAQ

Certain foods can help reduce inflammation and improve joint health in people with arthritis. These include:

  • Fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines): Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation.
  • Leafy greens (like spinach and kale): High in antioxidants and nutrients that fight inflammation.
  • Berries (strawberries, blueberries): Packed with antioxidants that protect the body from inflammation.
  • Nuts and seeds (such as almonds and flaxseeds): Good sources of healthy fats and anti-inflammatory compounds.
  • Olive oil: Contains healthy fats and oleocanthal, which has anti-inflammatory properties. A well-balanced diet rich in these foods can help alleviate arthritis symptoms over time.

The most effective medication for arthritis depends on the type and severity of the condition. Common medications include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These reduce pain and inflammation (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen).
  • Corticosteroids: Powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that provide quick relief for severe symptoms (e.g., prednisone).
  • Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs): These slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (e.g., methotrexate).
  • Biologics: Target specific components of the immune system and are effective for severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis (e.g., Humira, Enbrel). Always consult with a doctor to determine the best medication for your specific condition.

Certain foods can worsen inflammation and contribute to arthritis flare-ups. It’s best to avoid:

  • Processed and fried foods: High in unhealthy fats and can trigger inflammation.
  • Sugar and refined carbohydrates: Excessive sugar intake can increase the production of inflammatory cytokines.
  • Red and processed meats: These contain compounds that can worsen inflammation in the body.
  • Dairy products: Some people with arthritis find dairy aggravates their symptoms due to its inflammatory potential.
  • Excessive salt: High sodium intake can cause fluid retention and worsen inflammation. Eliminating or reducing these foods from your diet can help manage arthritis symptoms.
